After witnessing a call from a construction worker to his employer, pleading for the payment due to him (which amounted to more than 500E), many questions arose.
Is this an isolated incident, or does it happen frequently? While Malta benefits from a financial surplus due to the inexpensive labor these individuals provide, is it fair if they aren't even receiving their due wages? I suspect he's not the only one facing this issue. Moreover, are their salaries being documented?
These men, especially construction workers, are risking their lives daily. Despite two recent fatalities resulting from inadequate safety measures, both employers and employees seem in denial.
Delaying or withholding their paychecks for an unknown number of days or weeks is not only inhumane but also disregards the significant risks they face daily.
They rely on these earnings to afford their meager living spaces, whether it's a tiny, overcrowded apartment or, as observed, a densely populated, subpar farmhouse.
