Malta it’s time to remove your blindfold!

Updated: Dec 23, 2023

Why are we allowing our nation to lose its precious and unique identity? Why are we letting our once-beautiful islands become blocks of concrete?

Malta is allowing anyone who can afford it to buy a Maltese passport. How have we come to such terms? We are degrading the title of being Maltese. Our ancestors fought hard for us to become an independent nation. Isn't it considered a privilege to be Maltese anymore? What is happening in Malta? Since time immemorial, we have always valued the traditions foreigners brought more than our own, and yet here we are, lamenting because we no longer appreciate it.

Even foreigners recognize the potential of Maltese heritage. They buy Maltese antique properties because they are such gems to own. How can we fail to recognize the unique heritage we have acquired and become stewards of throughout the centuries? My heart breaks a little every time I learn that a unique Maltese traditional building will be demolished just to construct a block of flats. I don't want to live in a concrete jungle, and I'm sure I'm not alone.

THE TUNNEL: We will regret this! Couldn't this have been resolved in a more approachable manner? Faster and more frequent ferry trips could have provided a more viable solution, avoiding the monstrosity that will emerge in the near future. I'm from Gozo and study full-time in Malta, traveling back and forth frequently throughout the week, but I was never in favour of the tunnel! Gozo will never feel the same; it won't feel like home anymore.

We used to play in the streets; what a sweet childhood that was. Technology was available but was a choice, not an addiction. I've only recently turned 20, so yes, it was. Times are changing, and while I agree that this calls for change, I cannot endorse changes that are not sustainable. Everywhere you look, construction is underway, turning everything into an eyesore. This will become the new norm. Property values, as well as rents, are increasing! Regulations should be strengthened, and the nonsensical 12-hour shift renting should be stopped. Personally, I believe it would make more sense to make traditional Maltese properties more affordable for Maltese citizens. More worthwhile schemes to restore such buildings should be introduced alongside existing ones. Why are we letting this happen? It's so disheartening. Malta will become like everywhere else, because that's what the majority seems to want. Malta belongs not to the Maltese but to others.

I'm increasingly ashamed of being Maltese. Dear foreigner, here, buy a passport.
