Mistreating Elderly: New trend

Updated: Dec 23, 2023

Why are we neglecting the elderly?

Yesterday, as I passed by a Home for the Elderly, I noticed a woman in a wheelchair crying, yet no one seemed to comfort her. While it's possible she may suffer from mental conditions like dementia, which can cause confusion and distress (possibly the reason for her tears), it doesn't excuse the lack of compassion from the caregivers. Couldn't there be enough staff to simply offer her a comforting touch?

Let's not forget, not too long ago, these individuals were the younger generation. They were the ones we credited for bringing about significant changes in Malta. Showing them respect and kindness in their twilight years should be the least we can offer.

A confidential source once shared an unsettling experience from a specific elderly home. They overheard a caregiver verbally abusing an elderly lady, saying, “Ħadd mhu ġej jarak aktar.” Additionally, there were reports of constant mockery and degrading treatment. The living conditions described are shockingly reminiscent of neglect.

What has happened to our moral compass? How would you feel if this were your relative? Don't let the elderly in your life feel isolated; visit them whenever possible and assure them of recurrent visits.

Placing the elderly in homes shouldn't be a convenient way to distance them from our lives. It should be a decision made out of genuine necessity, especially if they require continuous care and supervision.

With advancements in healthcare, many are now living longer lives; 75 is becoming the new average life expectancy. But what's the purpose if this is the quality of life they endure?
