When Ignorance Reigns over Education

There seems to be a certain culture of ignorance that pervades this country that seems to persist, no matter how many so called social “advances” we take. Just 3 days ago, on Valentine’s day, so called “ex-gay” song writer and preacher Matthew Grech took to Facebook to complain about the distribution of condoms to MCAST students.

As you can see, his seemingly unhinged rant about idea of sex education and sexual health being taught to minors and young adults is only one of the many regressive beliefs that a lot of people in this country seem to hold. You only need to look at a few articles about sex education here to see the general opinion among the public, not only on sex education, but also education about different sexualities.

Matthew’s opinions about gay people come from a fundamentalist belief, as is the case with the vast majority of people who disagree with these subjects being taught. Every single conversation I have had with someone disagreeing with LGBT people or with sex education ended up being an argument about why they believe this, which then always leads to a weak attempt to hide the fact that this opinion comes from a belief, not any factual reasoning. This utter refusal to even engage in a good faith argument from this group of people shows a glaring problem in our society, that is only limited to this subject, but also found in any discussion about politics that includes some kind of criticism of any of the two main political parties on this island. We cannot let this kind of thinking remain on this island. Otherwise, we will continue to throttle any kind of development and advancement that could change this place for the better.
